Shivering Songs at The Capital Complex

With Let’s Be Ready, The Wooden Sky draws on nostalgia to capture the warmth of their earlier days. Coupled with a freshness that looks to the future, this warmth serves up a new sound and new hope for the Juno Award and Polaris Prize-nominated band. Shifting from lilting, fingerpicked folk ballads and rustic, sepia-toned country twang to skipping indie rock and contemplative ruminations on days gone by, their songs are diamonds-in-the-rough – hard-won tunes about regret, dusty roads, lost souls and urban life.

SORREY’s take on pop music is a lazy mix of washed out tones and sweet, airy melodies. Their music delivers an unapologetic reminder of how the heart pulses strongly during our fading romances. Across six finely crafted songs on the group’s debut EP, Thick As Thieves, vocalist and guitarist Emilee Sorrey’s direct-to-the-heart lyricism never loses its conviction. The band layers analog synthesizers, nylon-string guitars and vintage drum machines – all borrowed from sentimental 80s records.

Cellarghost is a sea-stained four-piece from New Brunswick’s southern shores. Their songs explore interpersonal isolation using macabre metaphors and undying post-punk grooves. The lyrics conjure images of fictitious beings and fearful realities, obscuring whether what scares you is really there at all. Crackling amps pump out harmonically rich chords and soaring leads, supported by bass lines deep below the surface and the pummelling consistency of tidal drums. While
